How is my bandwidth consumption measured?
How is my bandwidth consumption measured?
Bandwidth is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from & destined to the session IP address of your connection. Bandwidth consumption is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from and destined to the session IP address of your connection.
This consumption is session based and is only reflected on the bandwidth monitor once a session is closed, meaning that if the session lasts over several days it will only be reflected on the bandwidth consumption monitor on the day the session is disconnected.
The traffic measured includes retransmitted packets and packets dropped (eg by firewalls and antivirus programs on subscribers computer). We are currently unable to exclude or isolate such traffic from the counters. However the measurement of consumption is conservative and we tend to err to the benefit of subscribers in the algorithms used.
Furthermore, once the consumption quota has been reached we allow for a small amount of grace usage before throttling a connection. Please note that traffic generated unbeknown to subscribers such as spyware and virus traffic will be accumulated towards subscribers bandwidth consumption.
It is advised that appropriate measures (such as antivirus, firewalls etc) are used to ensure that your systems are securely maintained. To correlate traffic consumption with the monitors available, it will be useful to use a session based monitor such as Magitime, which is freely downloadable on the Internet.
What are the good and bad locations for iBurst devices?
What are the good and bad locations for iBurst devices?
    Good Locations
Areas that aren’t too built up or dense ie: close to window with not too many trees in the way, not on the floor, rather a window sill.
    Bad Locations
    • Electrified fencing - If signal goes through elecritified fencing the signal can deteriorate.
    • Tennis court fencing - Signal going through tennis court fencing to your base station can deteriorate throughput.
    • Dense tree growth - If in line with your base station, can deteriorate signal.
    • Burglar proofing - Can cause your signal to deteriorate. Place device antenna past the steel bars.
    • Walls - Walls bounce signal. Try to place the device to have a clear line to the base station.
    • Window tinting - Certain types of window tinting deteriorate signal quality.
    • Security gates - If working in a office with a security gate the bars may deteriorate the signal quality.
    • Steel window blinds - They can reflect your signal. Open them to improve signal.

Which ports are restricted on iBurst network?
Which ports are restricted on iBurst network?
Due to excessive DoS attacks and worm traffic, the following ports will be
    restricted: tcp 445, 135, 139, 1433, 1434; udp 1433, 1434. Furthermore,
peer to peer traffic is shaped on most iBurst packages. SMTP relaying on
port TCP 25 is restricted to authorised SMTP relays only.

    Connectivity and Coverage

Are iBurst drivers available for the new Mac OS (version 10-4)?
Are iBurst drivers available for the new Mac OS (version 10-4)?
Yes. Current iBurst drivers need to be loaded plus the supplemental driver for the UTC available off the web site. Be aware that, with the new Apple Intel Duo laptops, the following is not compatible:
    • UTU and UTD USB drivers are not compatible due to software incompatibility
    • UTC is not compatible, as Apple Intel Duo based laptops no longer use PCMCIA, replaced by ExpressCard The only option currently available for this range of laptops is UTD using Ethernet.

How can my MTU settings improve iBurst performance?
How can my MTU settings improve iBurst performance?
MTUs are critical when using iBurst. Connectivity in a networked environment requires MTUs set on the router and the network interface ports.
iBurst is based on PPPOE & default Windows MTU settings of 1500 can't be used, and should be adjusted, even if problems are not experienced.
Correctly set MTU will prevent packet fragmentation resulting in degraded connectivity. The recommended MTU for iBurst is 1392. For stand alone USB or PCMCIA please set the Dial Up Ras MTU to 1392 . Set MTU for VPN to 1364.

How secure is my iBurst connection?
How secure is my iBurst connection?
Once a subscriber is connected to the Internet with iBurst, the subscriber is exposed to the normal risks of any Internet connection - for example viruses intrusion attempts and malware.

It is advisable that normal Internet security measures are implemented by the subscribers, such as firewall, anti-spyware and anti-virus programmes It is equally important that such security measures be continuously maintained and updated.

Does my unused bandwidth roll over to the next month?
Does my unused bandwidth roll over to the next month?
The amount of data carried over which will be added to the new month’s
quota will be the maximum of the following:

o The package monthly quota and
o The amount of top-up data purchased in that month

Thus if the subscriber on a G1 package has 0.5GB left over, he will
have 1.5GB in the new month. If the same subscriber purchased 3GB
topup in the month and has 2.5GB left over, then they will have 3.5GB
    in the new month.

Unused top-up data will only carry over one month and will only
accumulate to a maximum of the monthly quota. Bandwidth is allocated at midnight on the 1st of every month.
If you have unused bandwidth, it’ll be reset with the new allocation to your account.

    Why is my speed low?
    Why is my speed low?
    • When you reach your CAP on packages 1G & above you’ll be throttled to a 64k line which makes it slower.
    • Your UT might need to be moved around to improve your signal quality resulting in faster speeds.
    • Are you doing Peer-to-Peer? This is not a prioritised function on our network and therefore does not get full download rates.
    • Uploading is slower (peak rate of 345 kbps as opposed to downlink speed of  up to 1 Mbps - depending on signal quality)
    • Check MTU settings – set MTU’s to 1392.

    Antenna installation

How can I see if my speeds have improved?
How can I see if my speeds have improved?
A good simple way is to use the speed test from the iBurst website. Make sure to take a reading before you connect the antenna and again after you connect, to compare. Always remember your maximum speed achievable is based in the coverage of the area you are in and the overall quality of the signal.
What do I do if I’m receiving better signal on the opposite side of the premises to where connectivity is required?
What do I do if I’m receiving better signal on the opposite side of the premises to where connectivity is required?
    • Install a wireless router and connect to this via your computers wireless interface.
    • Lay an Ethernet network cable (straight configuration) to the preferred location and use the Ethernet network adapter on the iBurst device for connectivity.
    • Move your computer to the preferred location.
    • Additional RF Extensions can be added to the standard 5m supplied. These are in the lengths of 5m or 10m. This is recommended as a last resort as additional cable results in a reduction in the signal quality received.
Where’s the best place to install my antenna?
Where’s the best place to install my antenna?
Your signal is best when there is a direct line of sight to a base station. So places high up, like roofs or high walls, are good because there is less chance of something obstructing the signal. Your signal is weakened by being bounced off walls or buildings before reaching the base station. The antenna should be mounted outside and on a solid surface, using the supplied plugs and screws, or onto a TV pole, but please bear in mind that the antenna is not lightning proof.

    iBurst iDSL FAQs

Can I choose not to have the Pay-per-use service?
Can I choose not to have the Pay-per-use service?

Yes you can.  Opting out of Pay-per-use means that upon reaching your data limit for the month, your service will be capped and you will have to buy a bandwidth booster to stay connected.  If you would prefer to opt out of Pay-per-use, click here.

Can I use my telephone at the same time as using the internet?
Can I use my telephone at the same time as using the internet?

Yes.  ADSL technology splits your existing phone line into two channels. One channel handles voice communication while the other channel is used for high-speed internet access. This allows you to enjoy fast, always-on Internet, and still make voice calls on the same line!

How do I change from another ISP to iBurst?
How do I change from another ISP to iBurst?

First you will have to cancel your ISP services contract with your existing ISP.  Allow enough time for this so that you are not paying for two services at once.

What do "shaped", "unshaped" and "local only" mean?
What do "shaped", "unshaped" and "local only" mean?
Shaped bandwidth prioritises and speeds up activities such as surfing the internet, doing your banking or checking your e-mail – things you are physically doing on your computer. We recommend this option for general internet use.
Unshaped bandwidth is used for activities you are leaving your PC to do while you’re not there.  It’s designed for more specialised internet use, such as forex trading and specific gaming applications.
Local bandwidth means you will only be able to use sites which are hosted in South Africa (although these may be .co.za, .com or any other domains).
    What is ADSL?
    What is ADSL?

ADSL is fast, always-on broadband internet that connects using a fixed telephone line.

    What is Pay-per-use?
    What is Pay-per-use?

All our new packages are automatically activated with Pay-per-use.  This means that if you reach your data limit for the month, instead of being capped, your service will continue and you will be charged per MB for the extra data you use, rounded up to the next MB.  If you don't wish to have the Pay-per-use service and would prefer to top up using a bandwidth booster or to be capped upon reaching your data limit, click here to opt out.

What is the price per MB on Pay-per-use?
What is the price per MB on Pay-per-use?
The price per MB varies depending on which ADSL service you have.  You will be charged R0.19 per MB on the Shaped service, R0.29 per MB on the Unshaped service and R0.09 per MB on the Local-only service.
To save money, you can buy a bundle of additional data at a lower cost per MB by purchasing a bandwidth booster.  Click here to buy a bandwidth booster.

iBurst will not be able to assure the quality of your voice as your bandwidth will be used for the data as well, ie. Your calls will be affected depending on how much data you are using at that time.

In addition to this, all packages are bundled with an iBurst modem; you can then dedicate the new modem for their voice only, and use the other modem for your data.

The hardware will be configured with the ADSL configuration, so if you want to use your modem, you are going to have to re-configure the system so that it reflects your modem details. This will mean that someone will have to come out and do it for you and it would mean that the client would be charged a call out fee.
