150 iBurst base stations bridge the digital divide
Wireless broadband provider iBurst has doubled its complement of base stations over the last six months. Some 150 base stations now provide coverage to almost 45 000 subscribers nationwide.
The 150th iBurst base station was erected this week in Irene, south of Pretoria. “Perhaps choosing such an historic village to build our 150th base station was a case of back to the future for iBurst,” commented Thami Mtshali, CEO of iBurst.
iBurst is planning to have 200 base stations by the end of 2007. In 2004, iBurst’s initial test network consisted of only two base stations, in Sandton and Sunninghill.
The results of a study released Thursday (5 July 2007) by technology market research consultancy World Wide Worx show that iBurst is “the only broadband offering attracting large numbers of new users. All other providers are simply upgrading existing users to broadband packages.”
“That iBurst is the only broadband provider helping South Africa to bridge the digital divide is exceptionally interesting news,” said Mr Mtshali.
July got off to a great start for iBurst with the launch of new and extended coverage in Irene, Northcliff South, Robertsham, Randhart, Edenglen, Moreleta Park, Wadeville, Parkmore and Montana (all in Gauteng) as well as Durban North in KZN.
Improved coverage nationally means that growing numbers of South Africans are replacing their snail-paced dial-up Internet connections and switching to hair-raising iBurst speeds up to 17 times faster than dial-up and up to 3 times faster than 3G.
Type in "broadband provider of the year" into Google.co.za’s search window and you’ll see that the top result will be iBurst. iBurst is your gateway to Google, Wikipedia, Amazon.com and many more Internet resources.
